The nqDoc Editor is a flexible and easy-to-use documentation tool. It combines document processing and XML-based structured authoring with single source publishing to help you create documentation in multiple languages and formats.

What are the main benefits using this tool?
Embed existing documentation fragments seamlessly into your documents. Due to its extension points for exporters, importers, resolvers and language packs the editor is easily extendable to fit your special requirements.

What are the main features?
The nqDoc Editor is a Document Processor. Setup your document following the WYSIWYM (What You See Is What You Mean) concept and deploy it using a format of your choice. By default DocBook, PDF, HTML and ASCII are supported. A single XML data source is used for all output requirements.

  • Single source publishing

Publish your documents from one single source to many formats. For example, a software company may have several products with user guides that share a common procedure. Rather than maintain duplicate versions of this procedure (one in each manual) the manuals can share the content, perhaps merging it into the document at the time of publication. Eliminating duplicate content can reduce translation costs and maintenance costs, improve consistency and minimize errors. [Wikipedia]

  • Team Work

nqDoc supports concurrent access of several users to all data by using a version control system like CVS or Subversion. Even widely distributed project teams can collaborate in one working process.

  • Multilingual

Using the forthcoming ML version of the nqDoc editor one document can hold content in multiple languages. Translate a finished document with the help of various tools. Providing documentation in multiple languages gets easy!

  • Link Existing Fragments

The editor can link to existing documentation fragments, no copy - paste. For example software manuals often contain code snippets. The editor can link to existing JavaDoc comments. Custom JavaDoc-Tags are supported to partition and organize source code comments.

  • Extendable

Do you need include data that is stored in your business database  or export to a special format? Publish your finshed documents using TeX ? The editor is highly extendable due to its extension points. Some free extensions can be found on the extensions page.

  • Content Focused

In contrast to WYSIWYG ("What You See Is What You Get") WYSIWYM ("What You See Is What You Mean") means that the displayed information only shows what purpose an element has (Chapter, Paragraph), and not how the documents final layout will look like.

This kind of formatting is used when the layout process is left to the application. Usually this way the formatting gets much more consequent and appealing. On the other hand the user does not have to care about the layout process and can concentrate on the content of a document.

A document can be exported to various formats. At the time of writing the following export formats are supported.

Output Formats: Export Formats
  • HTML
  • ASCII
  • DocBook
  • PDF
  • WordRTF
  • Eclipse Help

Additional exporters can be found on the extensions page. For system requirements, download and installation instructions please have a look at the download page.

We hope you'll enjoy editing!
